Biomaterials for Regenerative Medicine
Biomaterials characterization instruments are available either as a dedicated BioDynamic® test instrument or as an accessory to an existing ElectroForce® system (either a TestBench or ElectroForce 3200). BioDynamic test instruments are compatible for use in a cell culture incubator while ElectroForce 3200 and TestBench are benchtop instruments.
Single or multiple tissue engineering scaffolds and other related biomaterials can be mechanically loaded under tension/compression, torsion, cyclic hydrostatic pressure, and pulsatile or steady flow in a BioDynamic test instrument. Biomaterials degradation can be studied under dynamic loading conditions that mimic the in vivo environment, and the mechanical properties deterioration over time can be measured. Since biomaterials are characterized under sterile conditions, they can be non-destructively characterized in the BioDynamic chamber, implanted into animals, explanted, and re-characterized in the BioDynamic test instrument to study the effect of implantation on mechanical properties.

The TestBench system coupled with a BioDynamic chamber provides added flexibility due to its modular approach and can be configured for uniaxial (one motor, e.g., tension/compression) or biaxial (two motors, e.g., tension/compression and pulsatile loading or tension/compression and torsion) loading. Planar biaxial tests can be performed with a TestBench instrument without a BioDynamic chamber and use a heated saline bath instead. In addition, a 37°C enclosure is available for uniform control of test temperature when the BioDynamic chamber is mounted in the TestBench system.
The ElectroForce 3200 instrument is a versatile and robust choice for dynamic biomaterials characterization that can be combined with a BioDynamic chamber to provide a sterile test environment at ambient temperature. The BioDynamic chamber can be removed from the test frame for incubation or to allow the use of the 3200 test instrument for materials characterization under non-sterile conditions.
